Cricket Bats & Balls
Bats The recommended overall
length and width of the cricket bat should not be more than 38 inches and 4 1/4
inches respectively. The maximum thickness of the protective covering on the blade
should be 1/16 inches.
Blade and Handle, are two most important parts
of a cricket bat. Blade is made up of special type of willow, specially cricket-bat
Willow (Salix, alba var, caerulea), while the bat handle is commonly made of cane.
Willow wood is very stiff, light weighted, and highly shock resistant, and has
been therefore, the traditional material for making blades of cricket bats. Cane,
used for bat handle is very springy and light.
Balls Cricket Balls are
manufactured very scrupulously using different layers of various materials, and
these primarily made from a core of cork tautly wound with strong strings. Finally,
these are covered by a durable and sleek leather case, which is stitched to raise
the seam slightly. The maximum weight and circumference of the cricket ball should
be more than 5.75 oz and 229 mm. The color of cricket balls for test and first
class matches is dyed traditionally red. But for one day matches, white balls
are used owing to their increased visibility under floodlights.
